WeatherXL™ Silicone Modified Polyester
Paint-Based Protective Metal Coating
WeatherXL, the best-in-class Silicone Modified Polyester (SMP) coating from Sherwin-Williams® offers excellent durability at a budget-friendly price point. This popular protective metal coating combines the durable characteristics of ceramic and other inorganic pigments with the strength of an innovative silicone polyester resin to deliver extreme resistance to abrasion, chipping and marring, while also working to preserve brilliant color and gloss by defending against color fade and chalking from UV light exposure. And with their ability to reflect and emit heat, SMP protective metal coatings are a smart choice for the environment.
New and Improved!
WeatherXL offers even stronger protection and durability over previous formulas - resisting even tougher exterior and installation conditions and contributing to faster line speeds, quicker curing and less edge blistering - making it ideal for commercial and residential metal roofing, agricultural and industrial buildings, as well as metal wall panel systems.
Benefits of WeatherXL SMP
Extreme resistance to abrasion, chipping and marring
Resistance to color fade
Excellent gloss retention
Outstanding color consistency
Good resistance to chalking
Available in 18 colors
Tested and retested to ASTM standards in the most extreme environments, WeatherXL is designed to go where it will be abused.
The Sherwin-Williams fence in Ft. Myers, Florida is the most accredited manufacturer’s test facility in the coil coatings industry and the cornerstone of the company’s coil coating development. Exterior weather exposure (natural weathering) involves placing sample panels on inclined open racks, orientated towards the sun at a 45-degree angle and in a southerly direction. This angle ensures full UV exposure.
WeatherXL is backed with a guarantee against chipping, peeling, cracking or checking for up to 40 years and up to 30 years against fading and chalking.
Similar to other paint-based coatings, all silicone-modified polyester coatings contain the same primary elements. The difference between WeatherXL and other SMP products on the market is the quality of those ingredients and how they are combined.
RESINS PROVIDE THE BACKBONE
of the coating system formula together. They affect basic performance attributes such as resistance to abrasion, scratching, corrosion, moisture, and UV light, along with physical properties such as adhesion, hardness and flexibility. WeatherXL resins are manufactured by blending polyester with silicone intermediates and ceramic pigments.
PIGMENTS ADD COLOR, DURABILITY & STRENGTH
and protect against fading. WeatherXL protective metal coatings use an advanced proprietary formula containing only ceramic and select inorganic pigments that are more chemically stable contributing to its durability and efficiency as well as superior color and gloss retention.
SOLVENTS ALLOW FOR PROPER APPLICATION
and make up the vehicle by which solids are transported to the substrate. During the curing process, these solvents evaporate as the resin system adheres to the substrate. But while not present in the coating when dry, the role of solvents is essential in the coating formulation as they control the viscosity of application and optimize the performance of the entire system. Film quality, adhesion and even corrosion are affected strongly by the solvent's evaporation rate making quality selection important.
WHAT MAKES WEATHERXL SO DURABLE?
This two-coat paint system is ideal for a number of commercial and residential metal roofing, wall panel and other exterior products. In fact, the resistance to chalking, fading and scratching is the best in the industry for an SMP.
SMP MOLECULAR STRUCTURE
To achieve their hard, tough finish and help strengthen overall performance, SMP resins are created by reacting silicone into polyester. The carbon-silicone bond is one of the strongest bonds in nature, making WeatherXL incredibly durable in tough conditions. The result is better abrasion resistance for protection against rough handling during rollforming and installation and in environments subject to scratching or marring of the surface.
The carbon-silicone bond is one of the strongest in nature.
Scientists used a diamond stylus to test the scratch resistance of WeatherXL compared to the competition. Enhanced scratch resistance in even the harshest conditions. Result: WeatherXL demonstrated better scratch resistance.
