Natural Weathering

The Sherwin-Williams fence in Ft. Myers, Florida is the most accredited manufacturer’s test facility in the coil coatings industry and the cornerstone of the company’s coil coating development. Exterior weather exposure (natural weathering) involves placing sample panels on inclined open racks, orientated towards the sun at a 45-degree angle and in a southerly direction. This angle ensures full UV exposure which can be studied over time providing valuable insight on coating durability.

Engineers and scientists constantly monitor the data collected to evaluate Fluropon's real-world performance and ultimately in the development of new and improved products.

Fluropon is backed with a guarantee against chipping, peeling, cracking or checking for up to 40 years† and up to 30 years† against fading and chalking.

Going Costal?

If your metal panel installation is close to the sea, it will be subjected to extreme conditions. When you choose Fluropon 70% PVDF on aluminum, you’re covered† against chipping, cracking, peeling, flaking or checking for 40 years, and up to 30 years against premature chalking and fading, even projects directly on the ocean.

The quality and formulation of a paint-based protective metal coating determines its physical properties and long-term performance. The superior durability and strength of Fluropon 70% PVDF coatings are the result of a proprietary blend of high-performance Kynar 500® resins, acrylic, pigments, solvents and additives, demonstrated to outperforms other paint-based coatings is in all critical measures.

Fluropon Chemical Composition

CHEMISTRY BEHIND FLUROPON'S

LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE

RESINS PROVIDE THE BACKBONE

of the fluoropolymer formula, holding the entire coating system together. They affect basic performance attributes such as resistance to abrasion, scratching, corrosion, moisture, and UV light, along with physical properties such as adhesion, hardness and flexibility. Fluropon is manufactured using 70% Kynar 500 from Arkema, the premier PVDF resin-based system for architectural metal building products since 1965.

PIGMENTS ADD COLOR, DURABILITY & STRENGTH

and protect against fading. Depending on application, organic and non-organic pigments are used to achieve the right balance between color and long-term fade and weather resistance. Specialty pigments offer advanced performance needs such as additional solar-reflective and energy-saving properties.

SOLVENTS ALLOW FOR PROPER APPLICATION

and make up the vehicle by which solids are transported to the substrate. During the curing process, these solvents evaporate as the resin system adheres to the substrate. But while not present in the coating when dry, the role of solvents is essential in the coating formulation as they control the viscosity of application and optimize the performance of the entire system. Film quality, adhesion and even corrosion are affected strongly by the solvent's evaporation rate making quality selection important.

ADDITIVES CREATE SMOOTHNESS

regulating the cure rate, and enhancing the coating’s hardness, gloss, mar resistance, and other performance attributes.

7 LAYERS OF SOLID PERFORMANCE

How Fluropon is applied also contributes to its superior durability. In a highly automated, continuous coil coating process, the substrate coil is unwound, cleaned and pretreated, primed, painted and finished provides seamless, all-around protective coverage as well as a uniform finish.

How Fluropon is applied to metal roofing panels

TOPCOAT

pigmented 70% Kynar 500 PVDF for exceptional color, durability and energy-saving performance.

BACKER COAT
pigmented modified poly backer for color consistency, durability and added corrosion resistance.

PRIMER

(Top and Bottom) provides an excellent base for adhesion and additional corrosion protection.

CLEANING & PRETREATMENT

prepares metal for coating to promote adhesion and corrosion resistance.

PRETREATED SUBSTRATE
